WiFi LED Display Features & Customization
Everything on the panel is something you choose — the data, the art, the motion, the layout. The apps, built-in views, pictures and animations are starting points you can edit, not limits.
Popular apps
55 apps, each with its own icon and setup guide
Views → Add a View lists every app in groups — social, streaming, shop & business, energy & home, weather & nature, travel, developer, gaming & sport, finance & life. Each card shows the app's icon and what it needs:
- No setup (29 apps) — GitHub, Bluesky, Steam, Formula 1, electricity price, weather, earthquakes, flights overhead, the ISS and more.
- Free API key (15 apps) — YouTube, Stripe, Etsy, Plausible, Last.fm, Home Assistant… the dialog walks you through getting one.
- Sign in once (11 apps) — Spotify, Twitch, Instagram, Shopify, Strava, TikTok… the device keeps the login and renews it itself.
Pick the values to show, press Test to see real numbers before adding, then Add. The view shows the app's icon, the name of what you follow (the channel, repository, city…), then each value with a short title above it. Numbers are shortened to fit (12K, 1.6M), and some icons follow the live value — the weather icon changes with the sky.
Not just the listed values. Pick other fields opens
everything the app answered, as a tree — tick any value (a repository's
description, a channel's video count, a sensor's attribute…) and it's added next
to the others, fetched together with them, titled with the field's own name in plain
words (full_name becomes FULL NAME).
Any app can also be added as a single value to a view you already have: press Add a value and pick the app under Type.
The customizable core
Bring any data — custom JSON API sources
Point DataPix at any HTTP or HTTPS address that returns JSON. Each source has:
- a URL and up to 8 request headers
(auth tokens, API keys,
Accept— whatever the API needs); - a poll interval (minimum 10 seconds) and a 10 second timeout.
Press Test API to fetch a live sample. DataPix shows the
response as a tree — click the exact values you want
($.data.prices[0].amount, nested objects, array items). Each
becomes a value on the panel with its own:
Formats wrap the value with your own text and shape the number:
| Format | Shows |
|---|---|
{value} | the value as it is |
{value:.2f} $ | 2 decimals, then “ $” |
{value:k} | short numbers that fit: 12K, 1.6M, 35B |
{value:k/1000} | divide first, then shorten (metres → km) |
{value:days} | days until a date |
{value:t%H:%M} | a time from a Unix timestamp |
{value:map:0=Clear;1-3=Cloudy;*=Rain} | a word for a code or range |
Colour by value turns a value another colour below or above a number you choose (red when the air quality is poor). Fields named like “change” turn green when positive and red when negative on their own. View JSON source on any value shows the full answer it comes from, with its field highlighted.
Up to 8 custom data sources. Answers up to 8 KB for custom sources, 24 KB for calendar and RSS feeds, 64 KB for app stats.
Paint anything — your own pixel art
A per-pixel editor on a live 64×32 canvas: Move, Paint and Erase with a colour picker and click-drag painting. Colours are matched to what the panel can really show as you paint. Paint a full picture on its own, or underneath your text and data. Or start from one of 47 pictures and change it.
Animate anything — frame by frame
Draw an animation one frame at a time. Add, duplicate, delete and clear frames (up to 180 frames, stored compactly on the device), set the frame speed, and watch it loop live in the editor. Or start from one of 37 animations and paint over it.
Arrange anything — per-view control
A view is one screen of content. Drag every value to any position; values placed side by side keep an 8-pixel gap so numbers never run together. Per view you set:
| Setting | Range | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Name | free text | — |
| Time on screen | seconds | 10 |
| Brightness | 10–255 | 80 |
| Scrolling | Sideways (moves only while something is wider than the panel) · Up (wraps between words; rolls up only while it’s taller than the panel) | Sideways |
| Scroll speed | 0.1–16 pixels per step | 1 |
| Background animation | none, any scene, background, pattern or effect | one that suits the view |
| Refresh values | how often every value in the view is fetched — apps, built-in values and any JSON API · seconds, minimum 10 · 0 = each value's own schedule | 60 |
| Show on | weekdays, and a from / until time (may run past midnight) | every day, all day |
| Enabled | on / off | on |
| Order in rotation | move up / down | added last |
The device rotates through every enabled view that has content, holding each for its time and never cutting a scrolling message off half way. Up to 30 views, 64 values per view.
The editor canvas is bigger than the panel: the real 64×32 area is outlined, and a shaded area extends to the right (scroll sideways) or below (scroll up). Anything placed there scrolls into view on the device, in the same order and spacing you laid out.
Alerts — the panel tells you when it matters
Any live value can carry an alert: when it goes up (a new subscriber, order, star or sale), when it goes above or drops below a number you choose (a price, a temperature, a queue).
- When it fires, the panel jumps to that view and flashes it, then holds it for about 15 seconds before the rotation carries on.
- Optionally the value turns an alert colour while it flashes, then goes back to its normal or colour-by-value colour.
- Alert values are watched all the time, not only while their view is showing — a view can even be scheduled never to appear except when its alert fires.
- It fires on the change itself: never for the first value after a restart, and not again while a value stays past its limit.
Messages from Home Assistant, MQTT or any script
Push a message and it scrolls across the panel straight away, in the colour and for the time you choose, then your views come back. Up to five wait in line.
- Home Assistant: with MQTT discovery on, DataPix appears in Home
Assistant by itself as a device with a Message notify entity —
use it in any automation. No MQTT? A ready-made
rest_commandworks too. - MQTT: publish plain text or JSON to
<topic>/notify; the device reportsonline/offlineon<topic>/status. - Any script, app or phone shortcut: one request to
/rest/notify— or just open/rest/notify?text=Helloin a browser. - Everything stays on your network: your broker, your device, no cloud in between.
Night mode & schedules
- Night mode dims every view between the times you set — or turns the panel off, in which case messages and alerts wait until morning too. Nothing lights up the bedroom at 3 a.m.
- Schedules per view: pick the weekdays and hours each view is in the rotation — the commute on weekday mornings, the match on Saturday afternoon, the shop's orders during opening hours.
- Uses the time zone from Network Time.
Import your own images
Bring a GIF or a still picture (PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP). It is decoded in your browser and resized to the panel:
- Fit: Contain (letterbox) or Cover (crop to fill).
- Trim to a first / last frame, set the frame speed and brightness.
- A GIF can be up to 180 frames; a still becomes a one-frame view.
Accounts & API keys
One page lists every sign-in and saved API key, and which views use each one.
- Sign-ins renew themselves. When a login stops working the page says why, and Reconnect signs in again without breaking the views that use it.
- Update a key once. Rotate an API key and every view that uses it switches to the new one.
- Remove what you no longer use. Logins you start and then cancel are cleaned up on their own.
- Keys and tokens stay on the device. Exported views never contain them.
Firmware updates
When a new version is out, the setup page shows a banner with an Update button. The device downloads it, checks it, and installs it; if the new version fails to start, it goes back to the previous one on its own. You can still upload a firmware file by hand under System.
Starting points — all editable
Built-in view types
Sixteen one-form setups, grouped like the app. Each fills in a complete view, with a background animation that suits it, and opens it in the editor:
Custom texts & animations (no internet needed)
Weather & nature
News & calendar
Finance and sport
Temperature & Humidity reads an on-board sensor that will be added in a future firmware update.
