DataPix WiFi LED Display Troubleshooting
Start by reading the panel itself — it tells you which step it's stuck at.
Frequently asked questions
Does DataPix need an app or cloud account?
No. The setup page is served by the device itself over your WiFi. DataPix only contacts the services you set up yourself — there's no app to install and no account to create.
Why is my panel stuck on the DataPix WiFi network?
Its saved WiFi details are wrong. Use System → Factory reset — the device clears its settings and starts its own network again so you can reconnect it.
Why does my panel show a washed-out or all-red picture?
Not enough power. Use a USB-C power supply that can deliver enough current — a weak phone charger or a laptop port may not. Full white on every LED draws the most.
Why can't I reach the DataPix web page?
Use the IP address shown on the panel, from a device on the same network. There is no
datapix.local address.
An app stat stopped updating. What do I do?
Its sign-in may have expired or been revoked. Open Accounts & API keys: the account shows Needs reconnecting with the reason. Press Reconnect and sign in again — the views using it keep working, nothing needs rebuilding.
I changed my API key. Do I need to edit every view?
No. In Accounts & API keys press Update next to the key and enter the new one. Every view that uses it switches over.
Why does a value show N/A?
The field it reads is missing from the service's answer. Select the value in the editor and press View JSON source to see the answer and pick the right field.
A sign-in page says “Redirect URIs must use HTTPS”
Use exactly the address the DataPix setup dialog shows, including
https:// (for Twitch, Oura and Etsy it's
https://localhost:8888/callback). After you approve, your browser shows a
“can't connect” page — that's expected; copy its whole address back
into DataPix.
Where did these views come from? I didn’t create them.
A new DataPix starts with 23 example views — a clock, weather, crypto and stocks, electricity prices, GitHub, Bitcoin, Steam, Formula 1, the ISS, earthquakes, Arsenal's next match, BBC headlines, pixel art and full-panel effects — so there is something live on the panel straight away. They're ordinary views: edit, disable or delete them under Views. Deleted ones don’t come back unless you factory reset.
How often does DataPix refresh live data?
Each view has a Refresh every (s) setting — 60 seconds by default. Set it to 0 to use each value's own schedule: weather every 10 minutes, forecast and air quality every 30, crypto every 2, stock quotes every minute (the chart every 15), sports every 5 minutes to 6 hours depending on the view, calendar feeds every 30 minutes and RSS every 10. App stats use their own schedule: 5 minutes for most apps, faster for things that change quickly (Spotify, the ISS). Free API plans also limit how often you may ask.
What the panel is telling you
| On the panel | Meaning |
|---|---|
DataPix logo | Starting. Clears after a few seconds. |
| Scrolling “CONNECT TO WIFI …” | No WiFi saved. The device is running its own DataPix network
— join it and open http://192.168.4.1. |
WIFI CONNECTED - WEB UI: http://… | Just joined your network; the address of its web page. |
| Scrolling “OPEN http://… TO CREATE YOUR FIRST VIEW” | On your network, but no enabled view has anything to show yet. |
| Your views, rotating | Normal operation. |
Placeholders inside a view
| Shows | Meaning |
|---|---|
-- | Not fetched yet — wait a moment. |
N/A | The field isn't in the service's answer. |
ERR | The answer wasn't readable, or was larger than the limit (8 KB for custom sources, 24 KB for calendar and RSS, 64 KB for app stats). |
Symptom → cause → fix
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Panel dark, nothing shows | No power, or the cable only charges | Use a USB-C power supply and a cable that carries power; check it's pushed in fully. |
| Whole panel red / washed-out colours | Not enough power | Use a stronger USB-C power supply. This is the usual cause. |
| Can't reach the web page | Wrong address, a different network, or datapix.local (doesn't exist) |
Use the IP shown on the panel, on the same network. Check WiFi Connection → WiFi Status. |
Stuck on the DataPix network / forgot the WiFi password |
Saved WiFi details are wrong | System → Factory reset, then connect it again. |
| Phone's sign-in page hangs | The phone's mini browser is stuck | Open http://192.168.4.1 in a normal browser. |
| Panel says “NO VIEWS SET” but you have a view | The view is disabled or empty | Enable it and give it at least one value, picture or animation. |
| An app stat stopped changing | Its sign-in expired, or its key was changed or revoked | Accounts & API keys: Reconnect the account or Update the key. |
A value shows N/A |
The field isn't in the answer | Select the value, press View JSON source, pick the right field. |
| Live data updates slowly | Refresh settings and free-plan limits | Check the view's Refresh every (s). Free plans limit requests — e.g. Twelve Data allows 8 a minute and a stock view uses two. |
| “Firmware update failed” banner | The download was interrupted or didn't pass its check | Press Retry. The device keeps running the version it had. |
| Device restarts on its own now and then under heavy use | Memory clean-up | Expected. If it happens often, disable a few views that fetch data. |
