Spotify on an LED panel

The song playing on your Spotify account, scrolling sideways.

 You need: A Spotify Premium account (Spotify requires it for developer apps) · About 2 minutes

What it shows

  • ARTIST
  • SONG

Each value refreshes every 15 s. The view shows the Spotify icon, the name of what you follow, then each value with its title above it.

How to set it up

Spotify needs you to create a free "app" on their developer site once, so this device is allowed to read what you are playing.

  1. Create a Spotify app

    Open the Spotify Developer Dashboard, log in and click Create app. Fill in:

    • App name and App description: anything, e.g. "DataPix"
    • Redirect URIs: paste the address below and click Add
    • Which API/SDKs: tick Web API
    • Accept the terms and click Save

  2. Copy your app keys

    In your new app, open Settings. Copy the Client ID, then click View client secret and copy that too.

  3. Allow access

    Click the button below and approve. You will land on a page that says it can't be reached -- that is expected.

    Then press Connect Spotify in DataPix.

  4. Paste the address of that page

    Copy the whole address from the browser's address bar on that "can't be reached" page (it starts with http://127.0.0.1 and contains "code=") and paste it here, then click Add.

  5. Add it

    In DataPix go to Views → Add a View → Streaming & music → Spotify, fill in the form, press Test to see real values, then Add. You can also add it to any view as one value: Add a value → App stat.

Updates every 15 seconds while the view is showing. Spotify allows up to 5 users per developer app.

If something is wrong

Spotify said: invalid_grant

Each address works only once. Click Connect Spotify again and paste the new address.

Spotify said: INVALID_CLIENT

Check the Client ID and Client Secret, and that the redirect URI was added to the app exactly as shown.

Shows N/A

Nothing is playing on your account right now.

The Client Secret and login token are stored on this device only and are removed from exported views.

Keys and sign-ins stay on your DataPix. Change or remove them any time under Accounts & API keys.
